DOLL & PET THERAPY
Doll and pet therapy is a known resource in working with those living with Alzheimer's, Dementia, Anxiety Disorders and for the elderly who are isolated. Using a Teddy Bear, Animated Cat or a Baby Doll can be an effective way to decrease stress, agitation and depression. A caregiver can use doll therapy for those with dementia as a way to put responsibility, caring and structure back into the lives of those afflicted. Realistic dolls and pets have to be introduced to those with Alzheimer's very carefully. From experience, introducing the doll or pet in a controlled atmosphere allows those with dementia to take responsibility rather than just giving them the doll to play with. Dolls and pets can help a person who is not verbalizing to initiate speech again. It is part of the basic thought process to speak, hum or sing to a baby in your arms. The therapy doll can have its clothes washed, folded and put away and then dressed the next day. Even our teddy bears brings soothing comfort as they can be heated to bring warmth and companionship to a loved-one. Whether it is a realistic baby doll, a musical bear or a furry friend that purrs, doll and pet therapy for those in need has been proven to work!
